The Eusan Nation is a major faction in the Signalis universe. It is ruled by a repressive totalitarian regime, known for its military history. Most of the game's cast are citizens of the Eusan Nation and all of the game's events take place within the confines of the Nation, which spans several planets in the solar system.

History[edit]

Foundation[edit]

The Eusan Nation was founded by the Great Revolutionary and her Daughter, it fought for its independence from the Eusan Empire during the Revolution. It is now locked in a war with the Empire and seeks to conquer the planets still under the Empire's control.

War against the Empire[edit]

Likely some time after the death of the Eusan Empire's leader, the Grand Empress, the Great Revolutionary and the other founders of the Nation rose up in a civil war against the Empire. The Nation colonized Rotfront, Leng and Heimat, the latter becoming their capital. The Empire remained in control of Buyan, Kitezh and Vineta.

Battle for Vineta[edit]

There was a battle for Vineta, the homeworld of humanity.[1] In visions of LSTR-512's Gestalt life, a bright object can be seen falling from the sky onto the blue sea. Similar events are described in the And a star fell note:

"and a great burning star fell from the sky,

and a mountain fell into the sea and the water turned to blood, and th e

moon and stars and sun turned dark"

The mountains falling into the sea would explain why Vineta is an ocean world.

It seems the Nation came out victorious. In an alley in Rotfront Sektor C, a newspaper can be found that describes an imperial blockade against Vineta, implying that the Empire has lost control over it. However, this victory for the Nation may have come at a great cost, including the destruction of the planet's moon.

Current state of the war[edit]

The Nation, now in control of Vineta, is attempting to rebuild it. According to the above-mentioned newspaper article, diplomatic efforts with the Empire are underway but the Empire's fleet is destroying supply lines, causing the starvation of millions of Vinetans. However, it is not clear whether the newspaper can be trusted since the Nation enacts extensive censorship and propaganda.

Geography[edit]

For more information on the planets, see Solar System.

Heimat[edit]

The current capital of the Eusan Nation is the small moon of Heimat. The moon has many factories and is home to a large, tall building, surrounded by red banners, along with a gleaming orange light. It's implied that this is the Nation's central government building.

Vineta[edit]

Vineta is currently under the control of the Nation after a battle with the Empire for the planet. The planet was entirely submerged underwater after an unknown event, implied to be the deployment of nuclear weapons. This also presumably led to some sort of armistice between the Nation and the Empire. The planet appears to be full of refugees, most of which are starving to death.

Leng[edit]

Possibly colonized prior to the existence of the Nation, Leng is a vast, remote planet, rich in mineral resources that the Nation exploits. The Nation owns a major facility here known as the S-23 Sierpinski.

Rotfront[edit]

Rotfront is one of the Nation's most renowned colonies as well as the most recent one. Residents of Rotfront are divided into districts known as blockwarts, and the Nation provides schooling on the colony as well.

AEON[edit]

The Arbeits- und Erziehungsorgan der Nation ("Work and Education Organ of the Nation"), or AEON (stylized as ÆON on wall markings and posters) is a powerful institution of the Nation. From the evidence available in the game, it is in charge of security, law enforcement and dissent elimination in the Rotfront Sektors as well as forced labor and re-education in facilities such as S-23 Sierpinski. ÆON's headquarters is located on Heimat[2].

Life in the Eusan Nation[edit]

Replika supremacy[edit]

The Eusan Nation is reliant on Replikas which it uses as workhorses (EULR, ARAR, MNHR units) and for Gestalt population control (STAR, STCR, KLBR, ADLR, FKLR units). The higher-ranking Replika models, namely KLBR, KNCR, ADLR and FKLR units, hold authority over other Replikas as well.

Although they are artificial tools, Replikas seem to stand on a higher rung of the societal ladder than the Gestalts they work with and oversee. In the only inhabited locations we observe during the game, only Replikas are in positions of authority. In Sierpinski S-23, Replikas hold command, administration and law & rule enforcement posts. Meanwhile, Rotfront Sektor C's Blockwart ("block warden") is a Kolibri unit which receives information and advice from a Kranich unit and is itself under threat of decommission by a team of Protektor (FKLR, STAR, STCR) units[2].

Work, education and military service[edit]

Citizens of the Eusan Nation in Rotfront have jobs such as construction worker, Replika technician, store owner, mechanic[3] and more. Teenagers go to high schools such as Mandelbrot Polytechnische Oberschule and some go on to university[3]. Military service is compulsory.

As in the Sierpinski S-23 facility, cleaning, care and other menial tasks are taken care of by EULR units in Rotfront Sektor C and, presumably, throughout the Eusan Nation. STAR, STCR and KLBR units enforce the law and control the Gestalt population while taking orders from AEON.

Re-education and forced labor[edit]

AEON manages Gestalt re-education and forced labor facilities, such as S-23 Sierpinski, where it sends dissenters[4]. Gestalts there are under the authority of Replikas, living and working in uncomfortable and dehumanizing conditions. They are re-educated, taking for instance a "Political morals" class, and, in the particular case of S-23 Sierpinski, working in an ammunition factory and the underground mines.[4]

Their dormitories are cramped, the triple bunk beds resemble cages with their claustrophobic metal grills. This juxtaposes the Replika dormitories which are more spacious and colorful, even coming equipped with the Replika model's preferred persona stabilization items and fetish objects. The ADLR and FKLR units have their own office and personal living quarters.

When Gestalts dissent or commit a transgression, they are interrogated using torture devices. If this doesn't kill them, after confessing they are punished by being sentenced to food deprivation, isolation (the locking of the Gestalt individual in a cage barely large enough to hold a human being) or increased work, the punishment often lasting several days.[5] Their belongings are also sometimes confiscated by STCR and STAR units.[4] S-23 Sierpinski has a Rationing Officer, STCR-2307, who presumably decides which Gestalts eat as well as how much food.

Political ideology[edit]

The Eusan Nation is a totalitarian state in the style of communist regimes of the real-world 20th century. It practices extensive propaganda, censorship and repression.

Repression of individuality and lack of personal freedoms[edit]

Citizens are used as resources and tools to be exploited and, sometimes, discarded in the pursuit of political objectives. Displays of individuality and interest in the arts are disapproved of.[6] In all inhabited locations visited in the game, posters and murals remind citizens of rules and various prohibited behaviors.[7] The Rule of Six, dictating that people carry at most 6 items on them at any time, exemplifies the extensiveness and pervasiveness of the control of the state over each individual's behavior.

Propaganda[edit]

Propaganda posters are omnipresent.[8][9][10][11][12] It is speculated that the Penrose program is another instance of propaganda rather than a real attempt at finding new worlds, resources or alien life outside the solar system, as evidenced by the concluding sentence in the transmission sent to the Penrose-512 ship after 3000 cycles on its mission:

"Remember, you will die having served your Nation by partaking in a glorious demonstration of our power."

Thought control and censorship[edit]

Some words, such as Umerziehung ("re-education"), are banned altogether because "language shapes the world; a perfect world requires a perfect language".[13] KLBR units can read minds thanks to their bioresonance and use that power in the search of spies as well as to monitor the thoughts and behaviors of fellow Replikas.[14]

The Eusan Nation is also well known for restricting acess to or banning literature, such as The King in Yellow.

Militarism[edit]

The Eusan Nation relies on mandatory military service to wage war against the Eusan Empire. It is suspected that it claimed the lives of Isa and Erika Itou since there is no other explanation for the presence of a shrine honoring their memories in their parents' bookstore. It is also well known that the Nation has designed Replikas for combat, indicated by their use of the SAPR unit, a high functioning combat Replika model.

Violent language is used throughout propaganda to incite the people's fighting spirit, as seen in the Nation's posters targeting the Eusan Empire.[10]

Cult of personality[edit]

The Eusan Nation dedicates a cult of personality to its leaders, the Great Revolutionary and her daughter. Falke units, intended to act as godlike commanders of other Replikas, are designed to resemble the two leaders in terms of physical appearance.
